SEVERN RIVER HONEY BADGERS
Established 2006
Our History:
The Severn River Honey Badgers compete in the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Union and the Capital Geographic Union. In the summer of 2006, McAlister, Renoe, Korpella and Wiggins, affectionately now known as the Golden Girls, founded the Severn River women’s rugby team. In its infancy, the ladies practiced with the men’s team and scraped together a few additional ladies to enter 7s tournaments on the weekends. In the fall of 2006, they managed to recruit enough ladies to compete in their first fall 15s season, under the tutelage of Coach Kirk Wiggins. McAlister developed schedules, agendas and itineraries. She quickly saw the need for a women’s club board and was the first women elected in position. 18 years later, there are now 11 positions on the board.
Where we are now:
We play in the Women’s Division 2 and Division 3, 15's throughout the Fall and Spring Competitive seasons and social 7's in the Summer. We offer training and skills opportunities year round including indoor workouts. Located just minutes from Annapolis (Maryland's State Capital) and centered between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., our Home Pitch serves as a premiere training facility for the Mid-Atlantic, playing host to both Championship Events and Select Side Showcases along with our Home Matches. We are located behind the American Legion Post 175 at 832 Manhattan Beach Road in Severna Park.
Our Accomplishments:
Today, the Severn River Rugby Club is a thriving organization with over 200 members, including men’s, women’s, alumni and youth teams. The club has won numerous championships and accolades over the years, but its greatest legacy is the sense of community it has created around the sport of rugby, the club continues to inspire and unite people through the power of sport. The Honey Badgers named 2nd in the nation in 2012 and 2023.
